Collectors and fans alike have a chance to own one-of-a-kind Star Wars art pieces while giving to a good cause with The Empire Muggs Back. Lucasfilm asked artists, comic book creators, toy designers, and celebrity fans armed with markers, paint brushes and glue guns to transform blank which were auctioned by The Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Starwars.com chats with Star Wars artist David Rabbitte about his process for turning a blank Hasbro Mighty Muggs figure into a special tribute to Star Wars.

What did you choose to do for your Mighty Muggs art piece?

I chose to do two scenes from the films on either side of the Mugg. The rules were "Do anything with a Star Wars slant." I took that literally and thought while most people are going to be doing some kind of character, why don't I do something different?

I did the scene of Luke looking out from his homestead toward the twin suns setting on one side. Strangely enough the suns sort of looked like eyes. The other side is a view from the Millennium Falcon's cockpit as tie fighters attack.

What was your step-by-step process? What materials did you use?

The process was nothing too complicated. I had photo reference to work from. So after priming the Mighty Mugg I drew out the scenes in pencil, then painted in mainly acrylic to keep the art permanent.

What were some of the challenges you faced while making your art piece?

Just painting on a round surface is a bit of a challenge. Plus I was doing a scene on a character-shaped toy, so figuring out where one element of the scene began and where it ended was a little tricky. Like Luke's home ended up being on the character's arm, but the tip of it finished on the edge of its belly. You end up having to fudge it a little and hope people buy it.

Why do you think Star Wars fans will love The Empire Muggs Back project?

They are one-of-a-kind pieces of art which makes it collectible. But I also think fans will enjoy seeing how creative the artists will be. I was so impressed with everyone's contributions. You could tell people put their heart into it!
