3-D Comics

Comics with 3-D art have been around for decades, peaking in the 1950s, but Star Wars avoided the gimmick for years until a relatively quiet period of the late-1980s. The license to publish comic books had expired from Marvel Comics, and Dark Horse Comics had yet to enter the picture as a Star Wars publisher. Into that brief window entered Blackthorne Publishing.

The short-lived company banked on licensed 3-D publishing -- taking on high-profile properties like G.I. JOE, Rambo, Flintstones and Transformers. They even produced 3-D comics for such '80s fads as , Moonwalker, and The Noid.

The three Star Wars issues (published in 1987 - 1988) do not stand out as paragons of sequential art storytelling, though the first two were written by the legendary Len Wein (co-creator of Swamp Thing and Wolverine!). They're odd tales that don't fit comfortably into continuity -- Han Solo finds Hoth in one story, which doesn't line up with Luke finding it first in others.
