In 1999,
Star Wars publishing dropped a moon-sized bombshell when it killed Chewbacca in the pages of
Vector Prime, the first novel of the epic New Jedi Order series. The outpouring from fans was seismic, and as part of the reaction, Dark Horse Comics dedicated a four-issue miniseries to the Wookiee's memory. Written by Darko Macan, the series followed an anthology format with a number of different characters recounting first-hand experiences with Chewbacca. One tale in issue #2 is illustrated by Dave Gibbons. It serves as an origin-story of sort for bounty hunter Mala Mala, a character first introduced in
Vader's Quest.
