Toy Empire: Star Wars Rebels Roundup!

Hondo is probably making a deal for these right now.

Toy Empire is a column that examines modern Star Wars collectibles by theme, from characters to audience. If you need a guide for your own bounty hunting, look no further.

The big screen isn’t the only place with new Star Wars for fans to enjoy. Star Wars Rebels is a wonderfully fun animated series that helps to bridge the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, giving us insight into what went down during the rise of the Empire — and treating us to a look at what made Darth Vader the villain feared throughout the galaxy.

The show does an amazing job of feeling very “original trilogy” for long-time fans of the franchise, while at the same time nicely incorporating what we learned from the prequels. It has also delivered some exciting geek-out moments for fans that also followed the previous animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Whenever there’s something as awesome as Star Wars Rebels on TV, you better believe I’m on the lookout for new plastic treasures to buy up. Lucky for us, there are some really great Rebels toys already out there, and that’s what we’re talking about today!

3.75″ Action Figures by Hasbro

The classic action figure scale by Hasbro gives us the vastest collection of Rebels characters out there so far. The Rebels series was also among the first from Hasbro to resort back to the vintage-style five points of articulation, meaning the figures can only move at the head, arms, and legs. I find that this vintage style really seems to add charm to these particular characters. It gives them that much more of a classic Star Wars feel. Adding further to the vintage Kenner feel, this line gave us a Troop Transport vehicle that is based on a classic toy! Add an incredibly sinister McQuarrie-style Darth Vader to the mix, and you’ve got what I consider one of the most fun Star Wars toy lines in recent years.

6” Black Series Figures by Hasbro

Hasbro’s 6” Black Series action figures are more detail-oriented and feature a lot of articulation points, allowing for more dynamic poses. These are the figures aimed more toward collectors and, until recently, only featured characters from the various Star Wars films. That’s what makes the new Kanan Jarrus and Ahsoka Tano figures in this line unique. They come from the Rebels animated series, but are reimagined in this line with a more realistic look — as if they came from a film instead. The result is a pair of gorgeously detailed action figures that somehow still capture the charm of these characters we have grown to love in animated form. I’m hoping we see more Rebels characters get this treatment down the road. Sabine has already been announced, so that’s a good sign!

Jakks Pacific Big Rigs The Inquisitor

19″ Big Figs by Jakks Pacific

If giant action figures are your thing, then Jakks Pacific is your company! The oversized action figure has become the company’s staple in the toy aisle in recent years, and Star Wars has been a big part of that. Featuring a classic five points of articulation, these Rebels big figs stand 19” tall and feel sort of like giant versions of the smaller Hasbro figures. Characters such as Kanan, Ezra, and the Grand Inquisitor have already received this large-scale treatment. You likely won’t find the more obscure or a secondary characters in this particular toy line, but it’s pretty cool getting one or two massive action figures of some of your favorite lead characters to decorate your collection.

Disney Infinity

The toys-to-life video game Disney Infinity has been quite popular over the course of the last few years. It allows players to buy non-articulated mini figures of their favorite Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars characters and play as those characters in a video game environment. When Star Wars was introduced to the game this past year, Rebels characters were among the first to get the Infinity treatment. Even if you don’t play the video game, these figures make for wonderful collectibles! Disney Infinity has its own style, so while each Rebels character is instantly recognizable from the cartoon, they are a bit stylized to fit with the look of the video game. The figure sculpts are very well done, and the paint is bright and colorful. I really found myself falling in love with the style of these figures, and I think you will, too.

As much as I love everything on this list, I think my one complaint is that there just isn’t enough of it! With Season Two of Rebels now complete, and anticipation of an upcoming third season, I want more toys! More characters from the series deserve to have toy representation both for the old collectors like me and the kids who want to act-out their own Rebels adventures! Get to it, toy companies! You make it, and I promise I’ll be in the toy aisles buying it!

Until next time!
