The Combined Strength of Star Wars and San Diego Comic-Con

I was six years old when I saw The Empire Strikes Back in the movie theater for the first time. When the movie ended, I looked up at my dad and said, “I want to do that.” I didn’t know what “that” was. I just knew the movie changed my life. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that I would actually get to create new Star Wars stories, or create dialogue for some of my favorite characters from the original films. I just knew I didn’t want to leave the theater, I wanted Star Wars to be my life. And somehow, miraculously, it’s become my life (or at least a big part of it).

I’ve also been going to San Diego Comic-Con for many years. So coming to the Con as one of the ambassadors for the next chapter in the Star Wars saga was its own surreal experience. Here’s a few pics from my craziest Comic-Con yet…

Hollywood Boulevard the day before the con. I was in L.A., driving home, and saw these old friends on the street. I took a picture from the car…

First night of the con. A nice party thrown by Hitfix. A lot of drunken stormtroopers.

I sneakily snapped this one from backstage before the Rebels panel.

The Entertainment Weekly interview with me, Filoni, and the cast. I like Filoni’s Jedi trance in this picture.

Ezra, Kanan, and Sabine heading upstairs in Petco Park.

These are pictures from the convention floor. This was an out-of-body experience for me. Check out the Inquisitor with Luke and Han. If I had a time machine and could go back and show my six-year-old self one image from the future, this would be it.

This was my favorite thing from the whole convention. A family dressed as the Rebels crew. I wish I took a better picture, but we were introducing the show before screening it, so I was a little nervous. But this kid is Ezra.

Finally, my other favorite cosplayer of the con: cosplay Dave Filoni. I took this picture at the Rebels booth on the floor. Filoni is clearly as iconic as Vader now, it’s only a matter of time before he gets his own Lego action figure.

Simon Kinberg is executive producer of Star Wars Rebels, a new animated series coming October 2014.
