Ranking Rebels: 5 Highlights from “The Occupation”

Ezra returns home to find that the Empire's rule has taken a dark turn.

What do you do when you have more thoughts about Star Wars Rebels than you know what to do with? Make a list of your favorite moments — in no particular order, because that might fry your circuits. Welcome to Ranking Rebels.

When a message from Lothal hints at a new Imperial threat in “The Occupation,” the Ghost crew returns to a world much different than the one they left. With their old friends gone and the Empire’s grip getting tighter, Ezra, Sabine, Kanan, Hera, and Zeb find themselves undercover and on the run. Here are my five favorite moments from the episode!

1. Return to Lothal.

We know that Force vision and dreams can be hard to translate, especially when emotion is involved, but Ezra’s dream starts with a wolf howl, which makes it more interesting. He senses trouble and Lothal is definitely in trouble. He’s then sent to Lothal by Mon Mothma. The Force works in mysterious ways.

2. The Empire’s terrifying impact.

We thought things were bad before, but occupied Lothal is nothing like the planet we left. Gravity locks on landing, propaganda broadcasts, Old Jho being executed. It’s a completely different place and Ezra’s lucky to run into Jai Kell when both he and Sabine need a friend at a dangerous time.

3. Kanera. (Finally!)

The relationship between Kanan and Hera has always been sort of, shall we say, nebulous when it comes to a romantic connection, but this episode made a few things quite clear.

4. That sewer escape.

Things on Lothal have definitely gotten tighter when you can’t just steal a speeder like the old days. Cornered by the Empire, the crew escapes into the sewers and that’s just the beginning. Stormtroopers, probe droids galore, following the phoenixes and all of it leading to the standoff with our heroes facing off against the bad guys. Luckily, it’s Ryder to the rescue.

5. When Sabine reminds Ezra of who they are.

Ezra’s anger and frustration lead to him feeling that Saw was right about Lothal being lost. But Sabine reminds him that as long as they have each other, they have hope, and he’s back on track. This is how a rebellion starts. Just like they started on Lothal before, they can do it again. This team can do anything.

Honorable Mention: Kallus and Rex discussing who’s in charge of the Ghost while Hera’s away. Rex with the mic drop.

Those were my moments for this week’s episode. Tell us your favorite moments in the comments and may the Force be with you!
