Learning how to draw your favorite Star Wars characters is easier than you think. Attendees at WonderCon 2009 in San Francisco tried out their drawing skills with help from Star Wars artist Katie Cook, and You Can Draw: Star Wars author Bonnie Burton.

Kids and adults alike grabbed pencils and paper and got tips on how to draw whimsical sketches of Chewbacca with his dog, Darth Vader and his kitty, General Grievous and his pet hamster, and a stormtrooper riding a bantha, just to name a few.

Starwars.com chats with artist Katie Cook about the panel and why even Darth Vader deserves a cuddly pet.

Why do you like to do Star Wars drawing tutorials at conventions?

I love drawing, kids, Star Wars and making people smile. Doing the drawing tutorials at conventions gives me a chance to wrap all of these things up in a one hour session. It's a blast!

What character do kids seem to love to draw the most?

Chewbacca! Everyone loves to draw Chewbacca.

What the deal with all the cats hanging out with Darth Vader? I'm a pet person. I have two dogs and three cats. I have a firm belief that Anakin's life would have turned out much differently if he'd had a kitten. I think Chewie is a dog person.

What's your favorite part of the tutorial?

I love when I make a silly, obscure Star Wars reference and the room chuckles. They get it; they're fans. It's like being amongst "my own kind." Teaching the tutorials is the highlight of any convention I get to do them! they're fun, the audience participation is through the roof and they always end too soon. if you make it to one, bring a pencil, a sketchbook and all your nerdy knowledge!
