Ever wanted to draw Star Wars characters and vehicles just like the professional comic book artists? In this step-by-step series, Star Wars artists and illustrators show you how to draw some of the most beloved characters in the saga.
Star Wars illustrator Jessica Hickman explains with these easy-to-follow steps how to draw Jedi Aayla Secura from The Clone Wars animated TV series.

Step One:
When you decide on a pose, draw the basic shapes first. Here we have the head, body, and lines for where we want the legs to go.

Step Two:
Next, draw a little bit more detail in her form. Make the pencil marks nice and light so you can erase and draw them again if you want to change anything. She's a Twi'lek, so be sure to draw her head tails which are called lekku.

Step Three:
Now we're really going to start making the drawing look like Aayla! Aayla has large eyes and a curvy, athletic figure. She carries a lightsaber and wears a tight outfit to help her easily maneuver in battle.

Step Four:
Once you're happy with the drawing, make sure to tighten up the lines and erase any extra pencil marks before we begin to color. I like to color with markers, but you can use anything you want -- crayons, colored pencils, and even the computer. You can even make copies of your finished pencil drawing to practice using different coloring media.

Step Five:
Now we get to color! I add a lot of layers with my markers before I'm ready to ink and highlight the drawing. Here you can see the rough marker stage. I like to add the black ink lines after I'm done coloring. If I add the ink first, it might bleed when I touch it with the wet marker. This way I can wait until the markers are completely dry, then go over it with the ink outlines.

Step Six:
Almost done! Our last step to this tutorial is inking and highlights. Use a black pen to go around her body, clothing and face. It can be hard to get a nice, smooth line. Practice makes perfect. Then add some white pencil to lighten up some areas, and thicker white paint for the final, strong, white highlights (like the dots in her eyes, lips, etc.). Now you're done! Don't forget to sign your drawing before you show it to family and friends.
