Ever wanted to draw Star Wars characters and vehicles just like the professional comic book artists? In this step-by-step series, Star Wars artists and illustrators show you how to draw some of the most beloved characters in the saga.

"Gonk, gonk!" What's that sound? It's a friendly power droid -- the popular model is called the Industrial Automaton GNK unit, which is often referred to as a "gonk droid" for short. As the unsung heroes of the droid world, GNK power droids provide power to remote places like moisture farms. Even Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru Lars had one, and so can you with these easy steps.

Star Wars illustrator Amy Pronovost explains with these easy-to-follow steps on how to draw the power droid nicknamed Gonk.

Steps 1-5 are drawn lightly with a pencil. New steps are shown in red to make it easier to follow along. No pen, no dark lines. Finished lines and details will come at the end.

Step One:
Lightly draw a thin rectangle in the middle of your page. On the top and bottom of the rectangle, make trapezoids, ensuring that the top trapezoid is a little narrower than the bottom one. Make sure that the narrow rectangle is slightly wider then the trapezoids.
Step Two:
Make your GNK droid look more 3-D by drawing angled lines off the two top corners and the corners on the left side of the droid. Make sure these lines are all at around the same angle so you don't make it lopsided. Connect these lines, following the shape of your droid. Don't forget to draw an angled line from the top right hand corner of the long rectangle!
In the middle of the top trapezoid, draw a smaller trapezoid with rounded corners. Using straight lines draw Gonk's legs and rectangles for his feet. The walking foot is tricky, so just imagine it as a wedge coming towards you.
Step Four:
Using the rectangles on the feet for a guide, give Gonk some toes, remembering to keep the 3-D look, and erase the lines you no longer need. Draw some slightly curved lines on Gonk's legs and add a "C"-shaped hose going from his left leg to his left foot. Also give Gonk some "ears" and draw a line near the very top of the thin rectangle, making sure to follow the contour.
Step Five:
Almost done! Add some details to Gonk's face, buttons and lights galore! There are many different types of GNK droids, so don't worry if his face looks different. Divide the thin rectangle in half with two lines close together and add some details to his body and the pipe coming off his leg.
Step Six:
Darken the important lines on your Gonk drawing with pencil and add some shading if you like.
Step Seven:
Color your power droid using watercolors (as seen here), markers, crayons, colored pencils or even the computer by using a paint program.
