TCG: Death Star Approaching...
January 31, 2003

[ TCG: Death Star Approaching... ]

The Death Star has entered the Yavin system, and is orbiting past the immense gas giant, buying the Rebel Alliance desperately needed time to launch an offensive. Tiny snubfighters launch from the fourth moon, ready to exploit a design flaw that can destroy the gigantic battle station.

This is the backdrop of the Battle of Yavin, the major engagement of Episode IV that has now been translated into an expansion set of the Star Wars Trading Card Game from Wizards of the Coast. In a trading card game, opponents simulate the battle of the light side versus the dark side through the use of cards representing characters, vehicles, situations and more from the Star Wars galaxy. Players customize their decks with cards of varying power and effect, and do battle in three combat "arenas" -- character, ground and space-based conflicts. The first player to conquer two arenas win.

This new expansion adds 105 cards into the mix, inspired by the action-packed final act of Episode IV. For card collectors, there's also rare premium foiled versions of all the cards in the set. The cards will be available in 11-card booster packs.

Key cards in the Battle of Yavin set include Han Solo, Chewbacca, Grand Moff Tarkin, the Millennium Falcon, and of course, the mighty Death Star itself. This expansion set enhances the mechanics introduced in the previous SWTCG set by adding a number of new Pilots and Intercept units, as well as introduces an all-new mechanic: Retaliate, a powerful ability that allows you to strike back instantly at attacking units.

In addition to material derived from Episode IV, a number of Expanded Universe elements are included in the set. The digital artists at Wizards of the Coast have created all-new imagery for such items as the Rebel Armored Freerunner speeder, the Juggernaut, and the Chariot light assault vehicle.

The Battle of Yavin expansion is scheduled for arrival on March 31. For more information about the Star Wars Trading Card Game, visit Wizards of the Coast's official website here.
