The events described in
The Caamas Document and
The Hand of Thrawn are from a pair of novels by Timothy Zahn. Zahn was the first author of the Bantam Books publishing program in 1991 and he was asked to finish the series with a final duology that would feature many of the characters introduced in the Thrawn Trilogy. That first book,
Specter of the Past was published in 1998. The second book,
Vision of the Future, came out later that same year. Together, they were known as the Hand of Thrawn Duology.
Part of the plan of this stretch of continuity was that Mara Jade and Luke Skywalker would be wed. So even though that was decided earlier than 1998, everyone involved kept the plan a secret. What's interesting is that a number of books set after their marriage were published before 1998. In the Young Jedi Knights series of books (see Part Eleven), Luke and Mara are married yet no one makes any mention of it, and Mara is often conveniently absent to avoid pressing the subject.
Luke and Mara decide to spend the rest of their lives together at the end of the Hand of Thrawn duology, but the actual wedding would be depicted in comic book format. The Marriage of Luke and Mara is the subject of Union, a four-part series that Dark Horse published in 1999-2000. It was made available as a trade paperback in 2000.
