September 22, 2004

[ Click Here To View Images ] In celebration of the release of the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD, Chewbacca has hit the road to meet fans around the world with the "Where's the Wookiee?" tour.

The beloved hero of the bestselling Star Wars saga was last spotted in Madrid, Spain. His day began with a trip to the Prado Museum, where he needed to hold an impromptu press conference to explain to the media that they were welcome to tag along as long as they understood he was just another Wookiee on holiday. Climbing aboard one of the ubiquitous red Madrid Vision tourist buses, he headed to the historic Press Association building where he got an bird's-eye view of the city -- and a quick pedicure from a local shoeshine man.

[ Chewie Tour Continues: Madrid ] Stopping for a moment at the beautiful Plaza Cibeles with its massive fountain, Chewbacca made his way to the Hospital Niño Jesús, where he young patients were waiting to greet him with enormous smiles and hugs.

Back on his quick tour of the city's top sights, Chewie paid a visit to the Puerta de Alcala before conducting a last-minute interview with the Canal Plus TV program "La Hora Wiki" and its host Niko in a local cafe.

Next stop was the Reloj de la Puerta del Sol -- known throughout Spain as "Kilometer Zero," or the country's geographical center. By this time, word had spread throughout Madrid that Chewie was visiting, and hundreds of fans were waiting to see him. Crossing the street, Chewie came upon the Madrid sight he most longed to see: "El Oso y el Madroño," a well-known statue of a hungry bear who thinks with his stomach.

Mobbed by his well-wishers, Chewie made his last stop the mega-retailer El Corte Inglés, where more than 500 people were waiting to greet him. The department store had arranged for Chewie to get the red carpet treatment, and reporters from newspapers and television networks throughout Spain were on hand to quiz the Wookiee about his life in the Star Wars galaxy -- while Chewie himself was most interested in seeing the amazing display of DVDs inside the store.

Chewie began his world tour in Tokyo, Japan, but has also been seen in London, England, Sydney, Australia and Berlin, Germany.

Chewie will continue his travels across the globe to celebrate release of the Star Wars Trilogy DVD box set. So keep your eyes peeled, and if you see the Walking Carpet in person, say hello. The first few fans who offer a friendly handshake may be rewarded with a Star Wars Trilogy DVD box set!
