Charity Profile: Miami Children's Hospital Foundation
March 23, 2005

[ Charity Profile: Miami Children's Hospital Foundation ]Continuing in our extensive coverage of charities who are premiering Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith on May 12 in 10 cities across the United States and utilizing the event to raise critical funds and awareness for issues affecting children and families, here's a closer look at one of the participating charities: Miami Children's Hospital Foundation.

Miami Children's Hospital Foundation raises funds and awareness for Miami Children's Hospital, its programs and projects. Working together, the foundation and the hospital are committed to ensuring that no child will ever have to leave the region to receive state-of-the-art pediatric care.

"The foundation began as the dream of Ambassador David M. Walters, who lost his granddaughter, Shannon, to leukemia," Director of Marketing & Community Relations Ivette R. Diaz explains. "Shannon was too sick to travel and there was no hospital in South Florida that could provide adequate treatment for children with cancer. Her grandfather vowed to change that, and in 1976 founded Miami Children's Hospital Foundation to help fund the growth and expansion of the hospital. Today, Miami Children's Hospital treats over 185,000 children each year, has 600 attending physicians, 130 sub-specialists and has been consecutively ranked among the top pediatric hospitals in the United States by U.S. News & World Report."

In addition to the premiere movie screening of Revenge of the Sith, the foundation has planned a party fit for any Star Wars fan.

"In short, guests will walk out of the theatre and enter into a real life version of the infamous Mos Eisley Cantina -- alien band included," Diaz reveals. "It will be an out of this world experience, with lots of surprises for all!"

Young fans everywhere look to the films of Star Wars for both entertainment and much-needed inspiration, and so Miami Children's Hospital Foundation is excited for a possible charity partnership event.

"We are in the business of making kids healthy and happy, and Lucasfilm is the business of keeping them entertained -- a job they have managed to do very well for almost three decades," Diaz says. "Star Wars reached into new galaxies and our doctors are always reaching beyond the 'known' to find new ways to treat children in need."

The funds raised from this Star Wars event will be directed in equal amounts to Miami Children's Brain Institute and unrestricted needs of the hospital.

"This event will help broaden the our reach in the community -- to meet new people -- willing to help our cause," Diaz adds.
