On the Set

By Bonnie Burton

"People keep asking me if I get bored hanging out on the set," Katie says. "I don't. I've formed all these relationships with the makeup people and documentary team and so on. I think the best part of being in a new place is forming relationships, and I might not ever see these people again, but I'm definitely hoping to."

"Some of the most pivotal years of my life have been on this stage," Katie continues. "I can walk to certain places and be like, 'Oh, that's where I had my first kiss. And that's where I got totally ticked off at that person. And that's where I broke up with that person,' just walking around this one studio. And I don't want to leave that."

In addition to working alongside a talented cast and crew, the siblings also love the opportunity to work with their father whether he's behind the camera directing, or in front of it in his brief cameo as the mysterious Baron Papanoida. It was Katie who convinced her long-reluctant father to finally appear in a Star Wars film. During pick-up photography, Katie was to be added into the opera house interior via greenscreen, and she talked her dad into appearing with her.

"I really like watching him make decisions with the animators and the stunt men, and deciding where to put the droids or what I'm going to do," Jett says. "Like he will tell actors how to die, whether it's a slow death or a quick death. I just like watching him work in general."

Katie not only enjoyed seeing her dad in action as a director, but also the time they spent as just a normal father and daughter.

"Working with my dad is amazing," Katie smiles. "I don't think of him as a director, I think of him as just my dad. Even on the set, if he's talking to someone and I'm around, he'll come over and give me a hug even if he's doing something important. Family comes first to him and I think that's so important -- just the fact that he took off almost 20 years to raise us. And he could have been following his own dream. So since Star Wars is finally ending he will be able to continue that since we're all growing and older."

Amanda not only appreciated her father's offer of a role in the film, but is eager to see what's next on his plate. "It was nice to do a good job and do what I was supposed to do," Amanda says. "I didn't want to be babysat or have my dad regret finding a line for me because I really, really wanted one. I'm glad I didn't make him look like a jerk for giving me a chance."

As Lucas prepares to work on upcoming projects, Katie and Amanda are looking towards their own futures, which could easily include careers in the entertainment industry -- if the right opportunity arose.

"I've actually worked on a movie in Los Angeles and it was a whole other experience for me," Amanda says. "I learned a lot but it was also just very different. I don't know if it was just because everyone here was very supportive that I had such a great time and felt very comfortable. I would do it again, but I can't see myself going out and trying to audition. I'm not the type to seek out the L.A. scene, but I love to be in front of the camera and I still like to perform."

Katie, however, isn't so quick to add to her acting credits. "After living in the film industry for awhile, I have no desire to be in it," Katie says. "I know lots of great people and I'll let them do their own art. But I'd never work in the film industry, unless I was writing screenplays. Maybe if I'm working out of some little old studio in San Francisco, or living with like eight kids in Ohio, maybe then -- but, not now."

Even with filmmaking being a common thread in their lives, the Lucas family prefers to keep their lives private, and by most accounts normal.

"Living in a less glitzy place than L.A. allowed us to grow up normal," says Amanda. "Dad's lived in the same place for thirty years and people know he lives there. Sometimes people get excited when they see him but it's really not that big a deal."

"We were a bit sheltered, but we could still go to an MTV Movie Award Show or go to the Oscars, walk down the red carpet and get all made up," Amanda continues. "I love that. It's fun, but it's also nice to go home at night and know that not everyone recognizes who you are. We're just normal when we go to the mall. We went to the Mall of America for vacation one year. We go to the movies at the mall. We go shopping and eat at Chevy's."
