Scene 4: The Air Taxi Sequence The Phantom Menace contains many environmental scenes that establish the fantastic settings of the
Star Wars galaxy. The dive into
Otoh Gunga, the first shot of the
Theed Royal Palace, the flight into
Coruscant all are fleeting glimpses at immense worlds.
Often, these are cut short in the interests of advancing the story. One particularly spectacular arrival has been extended, offering a longer view at the towering cityscapes of the Republic capital world of Coruscant.
Arriving on the city-planet, Qui-Gon requests an audience with the Jedi Council while Jar Jar, Anakin and Padmé enter a waiting air taxi to be taken to Palpatine's apartment. The air taxi then weaves through the skyscrapers.
This sequence has been reincorporated into the movie proper on disc one.
Scene 5: Dawn Before the Race
The desert landscape is covered in an amber glow as the twin suns rise the morning of the Boonta Eve Classic. Kitster arrives at the Mos Espa Slave Quarters, riding atop an eopie and towing a second stubborn beast.
Artoo and Threepio put finishing touches on Anakin's Podracer. What was a rusty dust-covered hulk the day before is now a gleaming silver and blue racer. Padmé emerges from the quarters to find Anakin asleep in a corner. She wakes him, telling him to get ready for the race.
Scene 6: Anakin Scuffles with Greedo
The hovering salvage droids and Podrace spectator balloons suspended high over Mos Espa seem oblivious to the scenario playing itself out in the slave quarters. The raucous cry of children echoes off the adobe huts. Anakin Skywalker, fresh from his victory at the Boonta Eve Podrace, is now dirtied and dusty as he brawls with a young Rodian named Greedo.
Qui-Gon Jinn steps in and stops the fight with his powerful and commanding presence. He lifts Anakin from the scuffle, and asks both children what prompted the fight. Wald, Anakin's Rodian friend, has some prophetic words for Greedo as Anakin and Qui-Gon wander off.
"It's an essay on the judicial use of your power," says Lucas. "It showed a little bit of the dark side of Anakin," adds McCallum.
Scene 7: Farewell to Jira
After being freed by Qui-Gon, Anakin follows the Jedi Master as they leave Mos Espa. The young lad stops for one last goodbye. He visits Jira, the jolly old fruit vendor. Anakin spares a few of his winning truguts so that Jira can purchase a new cooling unit, and the two share a tender farewell.
On the outskirts of town, Qui-Gon notices a floating dark orb following them. He spins and cleaves the Sith probe droid in two with his lightsaber. Now concerned for their safety, Qui-Gon leads Anakin in a brisk trot into the desert, passing an odd-looking starship on the way.
