A four-month wait for the opening of Episode I didn't dampen the enthusiasm of Star Wars fans all over Italy as they crowded midnight shows, a first for any film in this country . The Italian premiere of The Phantom Menace took place in Rome Wednesday night. But the place for fans to be at midnight Thursday was the state-of-the-art Arcadia Theater in Melzo, a suburb of Milan, which has one of the largest seamless screens in the world. A special Star Wars event, sponsored by the Star Wars Alliance, the Italian Star Wars Fan Club, packed the Arcadia's largest auditorium with an excited crowd, many in costumes. They were treated to a display of large models of Star Wars vehicles--including a giant Naboo Starfighter and two battle droids, scratch-built by skilled Italian fans.

Lucasfilm's Steve Sansweet, assisted by fan club head Gian Paolo Gasperi, gave a behind-the-scenes presentation on the making of Episode I at the midnight show and again at the 9:30 A.M. show.

Episode I producer Rick McCallum will attend a screening of the film Monday and have a press conference at the Royal Palace in Caserta, which stood in for the Naboo Queen's palace in Episode I.
