From the Movies
Perhaps to make up for his tiny size, Ratts Tyerell piloted a Podracer with gigantic engines and immense turbine intakes. These engines -- 9.63 meters long -- were tragically too big for the Laguna Cave portion of the race. When Ratts' accelerator jammed, the little alien collided with the jagged cave stalactites, turning the imposing vehicle into a deadly fireball.
From the Expanded Universe
Twin Vokoff-Strood Titan 2150 rocket engines towed Ratts' cockpit around the speedway track at speeds of up to 841 kilometers per hour. Although the Titan's immense size could have allowed Ratts to muscle his way through crowded portions of the track, Tyerell was a gentleman among the pilots, and very rarely took the offensive.
Behind the Scenes
The Laguna Cave wherein Ratts crashed was partially realized as a detailed miniature, which was photographed and then scanned into a computer-generated environment. The pilot and the Podracer were also computer-generated models.
