From the Movies

The Jawas of Tatooine are a scavenger species that scours the deserts in hopes of finding machinery to salvage. As such, they carry weapons specially designed to incapacitate droids. The small rifle that connects to a belt-worn powerpack emits a smoky blast of energy that envelops a droid in an electric blue haze. By the time the discharge has worked its way through a droid's body, the automaton is rendered inactive, and the greedy scrap-dealers move in to lift it away.

From the Expanded Universe

While there is no "standard" Jawa blaster, most are cannibalized from similar parts. It begins life as a standard blaster rifle, with its laser assembly stripped away. In its place is a modified droid restraining bolt and an ion accu-accelerator, the latter presumably scavenged from starship wreckage.

Jawa blasters are notoriously unreliable, and have very limited range, forcing the Jawas to sneak up on their droid prey. The Empire employs a modern analog of the Jawa blaster, the sophisticated DEMP gun, to dispatch droid targets.

Behind the Scenes

Like many of the weapon props used in Star Wars, the Jawa ionization blaster is a heavily modified real-world firearm. It is a cut-down British World War II-era rifle dressed with other assorted props.
