From the Movies
Having failed to stop the Emperor and realizing that the galaxy had grown to be a dark and deadly place for any surviving Jedi, the revered Master Yoda fled into exile at the tragic end of the Clone Wars. Aboard a star-shaped escape pod, he journeyed to the obscure world of Dagobah. As the pod settled down on the marshy surface of the shrouded bog planet, its hatch opened and Yoda surveyed the grim surroundings. This would be his home for over two decades.
From the Expanded Universe
To begin his self-imposed exile on Dagobah, Yoda stowed away aboard an automated Polis Massan-registered super-freighter. Carrying grain to starving inhabitants of the Separatist stronghold of Sluis Van, the ship briefly dropped out of hyperspace just outside Dagobah's solar system. Launching his escape pod undetected and unrecorded, Yoda headed for his gloomy new home. With no hyperdrive aboard, the escape pod was used for a one-way journey.Exposure to the elements of Dagobah ruined the sensitive electronic systems of the vehicle within a year. Yoda salvaged what he could from the craft, using scavenged elements as part of a crude yet comfortable hut built near a lagoon. The hut's foundation was crafted from the pod's hull plates, while its thruster rings formed the door and window frames, and luminescent elements from the gravity compensators formed the lights to Yoda's hut.
Behind the Scenes
The designs for Yoda's final escape pod varied greatly in shape during development. Given that Yoda would use two pods through the course Episode III, care was taken to visually differentiate them. One concept was a round pod that would be dragged, Podracer-style, from a leading rocket. Keywords: Databank - Episode III
