From the Movies

Defending the besieged Banking Clan city-fortresses of Mygeeto were towering tri-droids. The huge, bulbous-headed mechanicals were ambulatory tripods equipped with chain-fed ordnance launchers capable of holing Republic artillery transports. The tri-droids are gigantic versions of the smaller anti-infantry octuptarra droids. Jedi General Ki-Adi-Mundi led the Galactic Marine clone troopers against enemy tri-droids during the final battles of the Clone Wars.

From the Expanded Universe

The Techno Union developed the octuptarra model of tripodal assault droid first, testing and refining the precision-engineered locomotive and weapon systems in a relatively inexpensively engineered format. After initial successes with the octuptarra, the demands of the Clone Wars resulted in the cost-saving reuse of the design in the tri-droid. Simulations proved that the designs were suitably scalable, so that the Techno Union simply mathematically translated the manufacturing process to the new size specifications. The laser turrets in the smaller model were turned into artillery launchers, with the hollows within the bulbous octuptarra heads transformed into ammunition storage for the chain-fed cannons.

Behind the Scenes

The octuptarra droids (seen on Utapau) and tri-droid (seen on Mygeeto) in Episode III shared the same basic digital model, with slight cosmetic alterations between the two such as the chain-fed guns.
