From the Movies

A diligent and simplistic worker droid, the chrome-plated asp has a very utilitarian appearance. Roughly humanoid in form, the asp has a sturdy, practical frame with simple joints powered by exposed hydraulic pistons and servomotors.

From the Expanded Universe

There are numerous models of Industrial Automaton asp units, varying in size and function. Most are uncomplicated fifth-degree labor droids, customized with add-on equipment and software. The ASP-7 is a common labor model. It has limited cognitive ability, and its no-frills vocodor can only respond "affirmative" or "negative."

The prefect of Mos Eisley had a team of many asp droids throughout the city. One particular droid, ASP-704, was tasked with adding a number of comm repeaters to the Mos Eisley communications network. When hassled by a passing Imperial Type IV probe droid, ASP-704's short temper caused him to swat the little nuisance out of the air.

Considerably taller and more complex than the ASP-7s are the ASP-19 droids. These are specifically modified for lightsaber training. Nicknamed "killer droids," Darth Vader maintained a small corps of these martial robots to spar with and hone his saber skills.

Behind the Scenes

The asp droid was an entirely computer-generated creation added to the Mos Eisley scenes in the Star Wars Trilogy: Special Edition. During production, the asp was nicknamed a "thindroid." Although developed for the Special Edition, the asp first appeared in the Shadows of the Empire novel and comic.
