Star Wars Memories

By Bonnie Burton

In addition to helping with the writing and pitching ideas to the team, as well as voicing iconic characters, Meyer had quite a bit of fun putting the show together.

"Of course, the best moments I had on the special were any time we had the real Star Wars actors in for voice records," Meyer smiles. "Everyone did a great job on the special. Just seeing it all come together from writing the sketches to watching the sets being built and then laying down the voices was just incredible. Seth MacFarlane is my go to guy for Emperor Palpatine now. My favorite times are when Seth and I get to record together. Our goal is to make the other one crack up. We voiced the Space Slugs from The Empire Strikes Back in a sketch and we just kept busting each other up. And for some reason the Space Slugs ended up being British. I don't know why, they just did."

For Benrubi, the most memorable moment was seeing the finished product with the Maker himself in the audience. "Seth and Matt took a giant group of people who work on the special to Skywalker Ranch to screen the finished cut," Benrubi recalls. "Mr. Lucas himself sat two seats away from me and laughed all the way through it."

While 'Robot Chicken' is no stranger to spoofing and parodying some of the most iconic franchises and films ever made, it's apparent in the Star Wars special how much the team truly appreciates the saga and what it represents. "I think if you watch 'Robot Chicken' you can tell that there are a few properties that we hold sacred like a farmer holds his crops," Meyer says. "Star Wars is the Holy Grail of properties to us. I think that's obvious in our sketches. We've all seen Leia with cinnamon buns for her hair or the 'are they or aren't they' question about C-3PO and R2-D2, with this special we really tried to go deeper into Star Wars lore and give the die hard fans a real funny treat. By the way, cinnamon buns for hair is still funny to me!"

"The great thing about the humor of 'Robot Chicken' is that you can feel the deep appreciation for fantasy/sci-fi/comics/toys that everyone involved has," Benrubi adds. "If the humor didn't start from love it wouldn't be funny."

Working on the special also brought back a few nostalgic childhood moments for both Meyer and Benrubi. "I was fully and completely obsessed with Star Wars toys," Benrubi recalls. "My first figure was the original 1978 issue Kenner stormtrooper. I lost his rifle in the car on the way home from the mall and had to go back to the toy store and pilfer one."

"Growing up in the '80s I'm pretty sure it was considered child abuse if you weren't allowed to play with Star Wars toys," Meyer laughs. "In fact, my parents wouldn't allow me to associate myself with kids who didn't. Buck Rogers' play set? Sorry, can't play with you. My first Star Wars toys were the action figures but when I got Slave I, Boba's ship, that was I entered the big time!"

With the Robot Chicken: Star Wars special, the duo hopes fans will get a chuckle from the inside jokes, as well as be gratified to know that they aren't alone in their love for a saga that continues to thrive generation after generation. "I'm lucky to have been at the perfect age for a hero-epic when Star Wars was released," Benrubi says. "It's as dear and important to me as almost any other story I've ever read, seen, or heard."

"George Lucas is a genius and he tapped into something that everyone on the planet could relate to -- good vs. evil, Leia in a metal bikini and furry teddy bears with spears," Meyer says. "Star Wars will always be cool for many reasons, like the sound of a lightsaber blazing to life, or answering an 'I love you' with 'I know.' And thanks to Star Wars, anytime someone asks me to do something I don't want to do, I can reply, 'but I was going into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters!"
