Ewok This Way: Mikey Post
December 15, 2006

[ Ewok This Way: Mikey Post ] Fans attending the 2007 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California not only get to see two magnificent floats, prequel queens, the Grambling State University marching band, and 200 stormtroopers from the 501st Legion, but also a few more familiar characters from the planet of Endor.

"I am very excited about being on the Endor float," Mikey Post says. "My family and I have been watching the Rose Bowl parade for years on television. I will be standing on the side of the float along with one of the three other Ewoks. I'm used to being the only Ewok around, so this time I've got some competition -- although I'm still the shortest one." The other three Ewoks on the Endor float will be played by actors Kevin Thompson, Arturo Gil and stuntman Joseph Griffo. The second float represents Naboo, the "garden planet" of the Star Wars saga, and will carry three queens of Naboo protected by two brave Jedi.

"During the rehearsal I was only able to see the bare bones of what these floats will actually look like, but still I was amazed," Post continues. "They have put so much detail into both, so I think it's going to just be unreal. Of course, the best part of being on the float will be seeing the reaction of so many people! I mean how many times do you get to see a live Ewok? I'd be so excited to sit in the crowd and watch this float full of Ewoks driving by."

[ Ewok This Way: Mikey Post ] This won't be Post's first time playing the most beloved Ewok in fandom -- Wicket, who was originally played by actor Warwick Davis in the film Return of the Jedi. Post last donned the furry costume for the Star Wars Road Trip across the U.S. meeting fans, seeing sights and celebrating the September 12 simultaneous release of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi on DVD.

"My old talent manager is actually married to Phil Fondacaro, who was an Ewok in Episode VI," Post explains. "Phil is friends with Warwick Davis (the legend), so when Warwick contacted Phil about looking for someone to play the role of Wicket, my name just happen to thankfully come up!"

[ Ewok This Way: Mikey Post ] Throughout the 11-city road trip, Post traveled alongside Chewbacca and Darth Vader visiting tourist attractions, athletic events and children's hospitals. "I think the most memorable part of the trip was in Seattle, Washington," Post says. "The employees at the Space Needle told us there were some people waiting for us at the top. We all got ready and took the long elevator ride up to the top of the needle. When the doors opened it was unreal. I felt like the president or something. There were so many camera flashes and just tons and tons of people. People were so excited and it was just such an awesome feeling to have been a part of that."

[ Ewok This Way: Mikey Post ] Another moment that stands out to Post involves becoming a frozen Ewok. "When we needed to take a break and the employees at the Space Needle told us there was a freezer nearby," Post says. "The costumes make you sweat quite a bit, so the second I heard 'freezer' I was in (literally). They walked us through the kitchen and into this enormous meat locker. It was the greatest feeling! I had someone from Lucasfilm take the Wicket head and hold the open end up to the freezer fan. Let's just say that after leaving that freezer, almost as an Ewok ice cube, I was able to stay in that costume longer than ever before."

In addition to his Ewok duties, Post also works for another pop culture icon -- Santa. In November 2006, Post became the spokes-elf for Big Lots stores in a nationally televised commercial campaign where viewers chose their favorite elf. Post thanks all the Star Wars fans who voted for him. "I was so excited to see the support I got from everyone," Post smiles. "I hope to go on another tour someday so I can thank you guys in person."

[ Ewok This Way: Mikey Post ] Post also continues to add to his filmography with a variety of comedies and horror films. "I was in the movie Black Knight with Martin Lawrence, where he goes back in time," Post says. "That came out about four years ago and I had a small role where I got to dance a little and knock a guy out with a mallet. I also was in a couple of horror movies. One came out recently called Rest Stop. In that movie I played the son of this really odd family. The movie itself is really creepy, on the DVD there is an extras section that has a whole part called 'Scotty's Blog;' it's a really different view of the way in which my character sees things."

"I just finished re-shooting some scenes for a comedy movie called Skid Marks which is about two EMT units that rival each other when the city decides they can only afford to keep one unit," Post adds. "I actually play an EMT, which is awesome. I was so excited to play this role because I don't think a little person has ever played an EMT in a film before. It's a really funny movie and should be out sometime around April 2007."

After portraying everything from an elf to an Ewok, Post says he'd like to try acting in a less eccentric role. "I would love to play just a plain old dad, maybe in a sitcom or movie. I'd just love to show people how possible it is for a little person to have a family and that it's totally normal."

As he continues acting in a variety of roles, Post says former little people actors from the Star Wars saga have continued to inspire him. "Kenny Baker and Felix Silla were definitely an inspiration when it comes to acting," Post says. "It's rare to see successful little people actors, so whenever they appear in movies or on TV it helps motivate and gives hope for those wishing to get into the business."

"Peter Dinklage is a huge inspiration as an actor," Post adds. "I love how he has made a name for himself by playing roles that are just normal. It's hard to come by roles that portray little people as just every day people, but he seems to only choose those types of parts. Like me, he is an actor first and a little person second. That's the type of actor that inspires me, someone that uses what they have to their advantage, but at the same time doesn't let it get in the way."

[ Ewok This Way: Mikey Post ] Now that Post will be getting back into his Wicket costume for the Rose Parade, he can't wait to see the fans' reactions about the floats and his fellow Ewoks. "After going on the 2006 Road Trip Tour, I realized what kind of Star Wars fans were out there," Post says. "I love the sense of community and the way in which Star Wars brings perfect strangers together. There isn't anything else like it. People of all ages can somehow relate with the movies and it's so amazing to see how many actually do. Star Wars will always be fun because there will never be anything else like it. The characters alone will keep Star Wars cool, because each and every one is just so interesting and different."
