When New Jersey DJ Tommy Mac started giving virtual tours featuring his showcase room full of
Star Wars collectibles, he had no idea that it would resonate so strongly with other collectors.
"I've been planning my toy room for as long as I can remember," Mac continues. "I always knew someday I would buy a house that had at least one room I could use to dedicate to my ever growing Star Wars collection. When that dream finally came true and I had it all set up and displayed the way I wanted it, of course I wanted to share it with people. Not too many people I know are as hardcore a fan as I am, so I figured I'd reach out to the one place I know is full if fans like me -- Star Wars Blogs."
His blog name, DJ Maul's Dancin' Cantina Party, evolved from several different ideas including his job as a mobile DJ. "I'm the guy who's always out there dancing up a storm and encouraging all the rest of the people at the party to join in and have fun too," Mac says. "That's also what my blog is about -- just having fun being a Star Wars fan and collector, and having an active part in the 'party' in whatever way you can."
Reading Mac's blog, visitors will not only get collecting tips, but also see some of his extensive collection in a virtual tour. "Any collector will tell you that a major part of the fun of collecting is sharing your collection with others who appreciate the same thing," Mac says. "I had actually done a few trial versions before, which were more or less just links to a webpage where I stored the pictures, but after Steve Sansweet started his "Rancho Obi-Wan Tour" video series I was inspired to try something on a much larger scale --- a piece by piece, picture by picture tour of my entire collection. It took a lot longer than I thought!"
When Mac writes about his collection, he also goes into detail on the back story of each item. "I enjoy explaining the real story behind how I got my collection," Mac says. "I also wound up having to go back and research a lot of my items to give them their proper names. Once the packaging is tossed, it can be hard to remember what that fuzzy alien's name is or what year it came out or what line it was from. I wrote one whole entry of the tour on the several store displays I had managed to add to the collection and how I acquired them, and another piece was dedicated to what I called 'Fun with Fishing Line,' where I showed several items that I had hung up around the room from fishing line for various effects."
With a room full of collectibles, it isn't easy for Mac to pinpoint his favorites, but eventually he narrows it down to three items that mean the most to him as a collector and fan. "One of my 'pride and joy' items is my Code 3 Millennium Falcon Die Cast Model which is hands down the most beautiful piece I own," Mac says. "Second is my copy of the February 2005 Vanity Fair issue that featured the fold-out cover of most of the major cast of all six films together in one picture. I had quite a few celebrities sign it while I was at Celebration III, including fellow collector Steve Sansweet! I hope to someday get more. My 'Holy Grail Quest' would be to get everyone who's on that cover to sign it, including George Lucas."
"Third is my collection of original 1978 action figures that I have along with the mail away plastic stand," Mac says. "These were a gift from my wife while we were still dating. She knew I loved Star Wars and had her mom go search their attic and found her old collection still there, along with a vintage landspeeder, and gave them to me! Of course how could I not marry her after that?"
Showcasing everything from candy lightsabers to car dashboard shrines in over 23 blog entries cataloging his collection, Mac says reaction to his blog has been overwhelmingly positive. "I've gotten responses from long-time collectors like myself as well as young kids who are new to the hobby," Mac says. "I've even received advice and ideas on how to display items better from some readers; I always love others' input. The best responses though are from kids who tell me that, thanks to viewing my collection, they just might open a few of their toys now!"
"I use my blog mainly just to share the joy of collecting, but I also hope that perhaps I can help fellow collectors, old or young, rookies or vets, to learn how to enjoy and showcase their own collections as well," Mac continues. "I don't want to preach too much in my blogs, but I'm also not too shy to try to convince people to open a few more of those toys they have hiding under the bed or stuffed in a closet, throw up a shelf somewhere and show them off! Who cares what they might be worth 20 years from now? Enjoy them now while you can! Belloq from Raiders of The Lost Ark has this great line he says to Indy, 'See this watch? It's worthless -- ten dollars from a vendor in the street. But I take it, bury it in the sand for a thousand years and it becomes priceless! Men will kill for it. Men like you and me.'"
"I suppose if you buried a Star Wars toy in the sand for a thousand years it might be worth enough to kill for, but me? I don't have a thousand years so I think I'll just open and enjoy it now, thanks."
