Planeta DeAgostini of Spain, publishers of the recently completed
Star Wars Fact Files, has launched a new, lavish magazine-style "partworks" series titled
Star Wars: Figuras de Plomo (the UK version will be called The Official Figurine Collection starting in September). Somewhat resembling the earlier Fact Files, this series is themed around a specific character for each issue, and includes a beautifully detailed, hand-painted 1:32 scale metal figure with each issue shipped every two weeks.
Each issue is comprised of several sections, including a spotlighted character, planets and locations, concepts of the Star Wars universe, ships and technology, droids, species and creatures, and aspects of the Star Wars phenomenon. These are done in the partworks style, where issues can be disassembled and reorganized in three-ring binders to build a growing encyclopedia. Also included is a section showcasing the development of the metal figurine, from posing the character to applying its detail.
Whereas the Fact Files explored several unrelated aspects of the Star Wars universe in each issue, the new series focuses on a single character and features related planets, technologies, species, etc. For example, the first issue explores the character Darth Vader, and includes his character profile, the Death Star, aspects of the Empire, the Super Star Destroyer, probe droids, etc. Fans of Star Wars lore and collectors will enjoy this latest offering from DeAgostini, which releases its ninth issue next week in Spain (issue #1 launched in February).
The Italian version, called Modelli Per Collezionisti, begins shipping this month, with the French and English versions launching in September. The English version will be distributed in the UK.
Subscribers to the Spanish and English versions will receive a free display base for the figurines, with binders, t-shirts, posters, backpacks, hats, and other exclusives available through the various subscription offers in Spain, England, France, and Italy.
