1978 7-inch Takara Chewbacca

There are many things to love about this uniquely Japanese Chewbacca toy. Responding to a more demanding and discerning toy-buying public, the Takara company produced bigger and more intricate toys than Kenner. Measuring at over seven inches, the toy itself towers over its 3 3/4" American counterpart. The removable bandolier strap and moveable waist further distinguish it.

An interesting detail is seen in the picture of Chewbacca on the cardback. The American cardback airbrushed out the crossbar that makes his weapon a "bowcaster" because Kenner wanted to pack the toy with a cheaper "laser rifle." Sparing no expense, the Takara picture proudly displays the image of the full bowcaster because their toy came with a weapon that you actually have to glue together- instructions and glue included !!!

This is to say nothing of the mysterious and amusing "STOOM TROOPER" text that obscures his face. Like so many things Japanese, there must be something lost in translation. -- Skye Paine
