It's not a Transformer in the branded sense of the term, but it basically possessed the same play value -- a ship that transforms into something else. Since Japan was the birthplace of the transformer-type space toy, it seems only logical that they'd be the first to release a Star Wars version -- in this case, an X-wing produced by Takara in 1978. So for this one, US toymakers get off the hook. Plus, they made good a couple years ago with an infinitely cool bona-fide Star Wars Transformers line.
